How Often Should The Office Be Deep Cleaned?

An office is a central hub of activity on a daily basis with multiple people occupying it for at least 8-10 hours a day. With so much going on, that office will be steadily accumulating grit, dirt, and harmful germs – and of course, these need to be cleaned on a regular basis.

Cleaning the office daily is a necessity in order to protect your worker’s health and to make it look presentable to anyone who walks in. But these regular cleanings only do so much when it comes to cleaning the whole office. It is akin to sweeping all the dust under the rug. It looks clean on the surface, but there is dirt and bacteria accumulating in the places that are not easily visible.

To completely clean the office, a deep cleaning must be initiated which will ensure that every nook and cranny is reached and cleaned. This is the only way to ensure that the office is completely safe for use throughout the year.

What Is A Deep Cleaning?

So what is the difference between regular cleaning and deep cleaning? Well, a deep clean is a step up from your everyday cleaning regimen. It involves reaching all the deep grime inside the office and will typically cover all the areas that aren’t usually cleaned or are difficult to reach.

Regular cleaning activities include:

  • Mopping and sweeping the floors
  • Cleaning the bathroom
  • Wiping down tables and surfaces

Deep cleaning activities include:

  • Cleaning behind appliances in the office – microwaves, fridges, vending machines,
  • Washing and wiping both sides of glass windows
  • The deep dusting of all the nooks and crannies
  • Scraping and cleaning between floor tiles to remove grit

For deep cleaning, you would usually require specialized cleaning equipment and considerably more effort than regular cleaning. It will also take up more time and will require all employees to not be present at the office as there will be many cleaning solutions used and a lot of activity which will disrupt work. It will have to be done on a weekend or holiday for the best results.

How Often Should You Be Deep Cleaning The Office?

Unlike regular cleaning which is done at least once a week, a deep clean will usually only need to be done once or twice a year. For most homes and small offices, deep cleaning every 6 months should be more than sufficient to completely sanitize and clean the whole area.

However, the number of times will depend on a few other factors:

  1. How big is the office?

The size is the biggest factor in determining how often it should be deep cleaned. Larger offices have more space for grime and dirt to build up in, and it also usually means that there are more areas that are not used very often. These places tend to be where dust accumulates the most as it is not disturbed, and regular cleaning will only focus on the areas that are most used. Larger offices will require you to deep clean more often during the year.

  1. How many employees work inside the office?

If there are a large number of employees, the office is inevitably going to be dirtier. People will be tracking in dirt from outside, more areas around the office will be used, and dead skin cells (as is typical with human habitation) will be abundant all around the office. More people will also mean that appliances such as microwaves are used more often. If the insides of these appliances aren’t cleaned, it can lead to health problems.

Even if the office is small, the more employees there are, the more likely it is that you will need to deep clean more often.

  1. How is the office furnished?

Depending on the furnishings around the office, you may have to deep clean more often. For example, if the office has carpeting, regular deep cleans will have to be scheduled to avoid bad odors and health implications from dirt that will get trapped in the carpet. The use of blinds or other covers on the windows will also mean that dust will get trapped behind or on them, and so they will have to be washed regularly as well.

Before you decide on a deep cleaning scheduling, you will have to factor all of the above into account to ensure that all employees are 100% safe inside the office. For most places though, at least two times should be the minimum number for any year.
